National Politics and Elections Team

Led by journalists in Washington and in key states around the country, the AP U.S. politics and elections team endeavors to break news while providing clarity and crucial context. The team provides in-depth explanatory coverage of the U.S. elections process and boast an impressive record of exclusive reports, accuracy and accountability journalism across formats.

Meet the team:

Anna Johnson headshot

Anna Johnson is Washington Bureau Chief where she oversees AP’s coverage of U.S. elections and politics, America’s federal government and foreign and domestic policy. Prior to moving to Washington in 2022, she was AP’s news director for Europe and Africa based in London. Johnson also was based in Phoenix, Chicago and Cairo, Egypt, earlier in her AP career.

Steven Sloan is AP's deputy Washington bureau chief and political director. He previously worked at CNN, where he was the director of enterprise reporting in the Washington bureau, overseeing in-depth coverage for the network's digital and television platforms. He has also edited congressional coverage at Politico and was a reporter at Bloomberg News.

Jack Auresto is the Deputy Washington Bureau Chief, overseeing video newsgathering at the White House, Congress, State Department and Pentagon. He also oversees video coverage for national politics and U.S. elections. Auresto is an Emmy Award-winning journalist with 20 years of experience covering national and local politics. He started his career as a political producer and manager at the FOX and NBC affiliates in Boston.

Pablo Martínez Monsiváis is the AP's assistant chief of bureau for photography in Washington and has been on staff for more than two decades, a career that has spanned 5 presidencies. Monsiváis  has covered major sporting events, World Series, NBA, NHL finals and World Cup Soccer. With fellow AP photo staff, he won a Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography for coverage of President Clinton’s impeachment and has received awards from World Press Photo, WHNPA and NAHJ. He lives in DC with his wife and son.

Michael Tackett oversees the White House and Congress teams as deputy Washington bureau chief. He joined AP from The New York Times, where he worked as a political reporter and deputy Washington editor. Tackett previously served as Bloomberg News' managing editor and Washington bureau chief, and Washington bureau chief and political writer at the Chicago Tribune.  He has covered six presidential campaigns.

Katie Vogel is a politics editor at AP focused on digital coverage. Prior to her time in DC, she worked with Hearst Newspapers, USA Today, The Cincinnati Enquirer and Detour Detroit/Outlier Media.

David Scott is vice president and head of news strategy and operations at The Associated Press. He is responsible for the setting the strategic direction of AP’s news report and driving the implementation of overall priorities and new initiatives. Scott oversees AP’s public opinion research and election decision teams, and coordinates AP’s overall coverage of U.S. elections. A graduate of the University of Missouri, he lives in Portland, Maine.

National politics team:

Nomaan Merchant is the U.S. politics editor, overseeing coverage of U.S. politics and elections. Merchant has held a variety of reporting roles over the past decade at AP, covering law enforcement in Dallas, working as a general assignment reporter in Beijing, and reporting on immigration and border affairs from Houston. More recently, he has worked in the Washington bureau since 2021, focusing on intelligence and national security reporting.

Ashley Thomas is the deputy politics editor. She joined the Washington bureau in 2017 after stints in Philadelphia and New York. She has worked for the AP since 2008.

Scott Stroud joined the team in 2023 as a political editor based in Nashville, where he previously supervised news coverage in the Appalachian region. He was born in Arkansas but grew up in Detroit and is a graduate of the University of Michigan. He joined the AP in 2014 after working as a journalist in Arkansas, Kentucky, North and South Carolina, Texas and Tennessee.

Sara Burnett oversees immersive storytelling projects for the 2024 election. Since joining AP in 2012, she has covered politics in Illinois and the central U.S. as well as the 2020 presidential race. She previously reported for The Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News in Colorado and the Daily Herald in suburban Chicago. Sara is based in Chicago.

Bill Barrow is a national politics reporter based in Atlanta, focused on the Democratic Party. He covers national political trends with special attention to a 13-state region that extends from Maryland to Louisiana. Before joining AP, Barrow covered politics for newspapers in Alabama and Louisiana.

Thomas Beaumont is a national political correspondent based in Des Moines Iowa covering the 2024 presidential campaign, his fourth race for the White House with The Associated Press. He’s been the AP’s lead reporter covering the run up to Iowa’s lead-off caucuses, led battleground general election coverage and followed candidates throughout the country and overseas.


Jill Colvin is a national political reporter based in New York covering the 2024 election, with a focus on Trump and Republican politics. She previously served as a White House reporter in the Washington bureau and has spent more than a decade covering local, city, state and national politics, reporting from nearly every state in the nation and dozens of countries around the glob

Jonathan J. Cooper is a politics reporter based in Phoenix. He has covered campaigns and state government from bases in Arizona, Oregon and California since joining the AP in 2009. He covered John McCain’s toughest Senate race during the 2010 tea party wave, Gavin Newsom’s election as California governor and the emergence of Arizona as a swing state during the Trump era. He has also extensively covered California’s most destructive wildfires.

Adriana Gomez Licon, based in Miami, covers the political influence of Hispanic voters. In the last decade Licon served as a foreign correspondent for AP in Mexico and Brazil, covering drug cartel violence, elections, natural disasters, large sporting events, among other news events of international interest.

Meg Kinnard is a national politics reporter, currently in her 19th year with AP. Living in South Carolina, she focuses the bulk of her attention on the politics of the U.S. South, breaking political news and the 2024 presidential campaign. Meg is a graduate of the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and has a master's degree in digital communication from UNC-Chapel Hill.

Steve Peoples, based in New York, is AP’s chief political writer with a focus on the biggest political trends, voter behavior and major statewide campaigns. He has covered politics for more than a decade and lead AP's coverage of the 2020 presidential campaign. He spent much of the 2016 election cycle focused on the national Republican Party. Peoples traveled with Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign in 2012.

Michelle L. Price is a national political reporter based in New York, covering the Republican race for president. She previously covered politics in New York state and New York City. Before moving to the East Coast, she spent more than a decade in the West for AP, writing about Nevada and its presidential caucuses, Utah and its statehouse, and Arizona.

Brian Slodysko covers money and politics from Washington. Previously he delivered a steady stream of scoops from AP's Indianapolis bureau, including during the 2018 midterm elections, and he contributed to AP's campaign finance coverage. Before joining AP, Slodysko worked at the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times.

Will Weissert is a national politics reporter. His chief focus is the White House and Biden reelection campaign. He has previously worked for AP in Guatemala, Mexico, Cuba and Texas.

Democracy team:

Tom Verdin is the democracy news editor, overseeing coverage of the challenges to democracy, voting patterns and access, election administration and more. Over the course of over two decades at the AP, Verdin has held a variety of roles and most recently managed AP’s signature coverage of state government in all 50 statehouses.

 

Ayanna Alexander covers race and voting. Ayanna’s beat includes a deeper look at the impact of redistricting and gerrymandering at the local, state, and congressional level and voting restrictions on the most marginalized communities. Prior to the AP, Ayanna worked at Bloomberg Law, where she was the first social justice reporter. Her most notable coverage was the trial of former Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin, who was convicted of murdering George Floyd.

Christina Cassidy, based in Atlanta, covers how elections are administered throughout the U.S. She joined the AP in 2001 and has reported from AP bureaus in California, Nevada, Montana and Georgia. She is currently covering election security heading into the 2020 presidential election. Cassidy graduated from the University of Southern California in 2001 with undergraduate degrees in journalism and political science.

Gary Fields covers challenges to U.S. democracy with a focus on marginalized communities. Fields previously served as AP's Global Religion News Editor. Gary is a veteran journalist with more than three decades of experience ranging from sports reporting to investigative projects. He’s a former board member for the Fund for Investigative Journalism. Prior to joining AP, Fields was the senior manager of content for Lutheran World Relief/IMA World Health and was a reporter for The Wall Street Journal covering the Justice Department.

Serkan Gurbuz is a video journalist based in Washington. He also has extensive experience as a photo editor and photographer. He is an FAA-certified drone pilot and a PADI-certified advanced scuba diver. Serkan earned an M.A. in Journalism from the University of Missouri in Columbia on a Fulbright scholarship and a B.A. in International Relations from Bilkent University in Turkey.

Nicholas Riccardi is a national political reporter for The Asociated Press, based in Denver. He is a former national reporter for the Los Angeles Times and a native New Yorker.

Ali Swenson reports on election-related misinformation, disinformation and extremism for The Associated Press. Her coverage ahead of the 2024 U.S. election includes the expanding influence of generative AI in politics. Swenson has a background in print reporting and audio production and holds a graduate degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. She is based in New York.

Covering the White House:

Nancy Benac is White House news editor, overseeing AP’s coverage of the Biden administration. She has reported on government and politics in Washington for more than three decades, covering a wide variety of beats, including the Clinton White House. Benac served as political editor for three national election cycles.

Zeke Miller has been the chief White House Correspondent for the Associated Press since August 2022 where he leads coverage of the president and the presidency. He joined the AP in October 2017 as a White House reporter after nearly five years as White House and political reporter at Time Magazine. He is a past president of the White House Correspondents’ Association.

Josh Boak covers the White House and economic policy for The Associated Press. He has been a Washington-based reporter for AP since 2013. He previously was deputy Washington bureau chief for The Fiscal Times and an economics reporter for Politico. Boak came to Washington in 2009 to work for Bob Woodward on the book "Obama's Wars." He also worked for the Chicago Tribune and The Blade in Toledo, Ohio, where he won a Livingston Award and a Gerald Loeb Award. Boak graduated from Princeton University and received a graduate degree in journalism from Columbia University.

Tracy Brown is a senior producer focused on national, foreign policy & U.S. politics.

Kelly Daschle is a senior producer and Murrow Award-winning journalist for The Associated Press, covering the White House, Washington and national politics. She's been covering presidential and congressional elections for over 25 years. Prior to the AP, she worked as a Washington-based producer for Tribune Broadcasting and as a health reporter in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Andrew Harnik has worked as a newspaper and magazine photojournalist since 2003. He has been recognized with awards from the Photos of the Year International and National Press Photographers Association's Best of Photojournalism competitions, as well as the White House News Photographers Association for almost two decades, including the Political Photograph of the Year in 2012, and again in 2017, a top honor.

Seung Min Kim is a White House reporter covering the relationship between the Biden administration and Congress. Prior to joining AP in 2022, she was a White House Correspondent for The Washington Post. Before joining The Post, she spent more than eight years at Politico, primarily covering the Senate and immigration policy.

Colleen Long is a White House reporter for The Associated Press with a focus on legal affairs, immigration and gun violence. She's worked in Washington since 2018 where she has also covered Homeland Security, and led the AP's law enforcement, Justice Department and Supreme Court coverage. Before coming to Washington, she covered crime, courts and the NYPD for more than a decade.

Aamer Madhani is a White House reporter specializing in coverage of national security. Prior to joining AP in 2019, he was a longtime correspondent for USA Today, where he had served as White House correspondent and Baghdad bureau chief. Most recently, Madhani was USA Today’s Chicago-based national correspondent, covering the 2020 presidential campaign, policing in America, prisons, mass shootings and natural disasters.

Chris Megerian is a White House reporter covering domestic policy and the presidency writ large. Prior to joining AP, he was a White House correspondent at the Los Angeles Times. He has also covered politics, the state police and the prison system for The Star-Ledger, and was an intern at Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Businessweek, and the Gwinnett Daily Post in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Megerian has a B.A. in journalism and international studies from Emory University.

Darlene Superville headshot

Darlene Superville has covered the White House for AP since 2009, with an emphasis on first ladies and the first second gentleman. She also is co-author of "Jill," a 2022 biography of first lady Jill Biden, written with Executive Editor Julie Pace. Darlene is a native New Yorker and graduate of NYU.

Evan Vucci is the AP chief photographer in Washington. He was part of the AP team that was awarded the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography for coverage of the aftermath of the death of George Floyd. His video work was awarded an Edward R. Murrow award for coverage of an American platoon on a combat deployment in Mosul, Iraq.

Covering Congress:

Dustin Weaver is AP's congressional editor, overseeing coverage of Capitol Hill. Weaver joined AP from The Hill, where he directed the paper’s print and digital coverage of Congress, the White House and other Washington beats. He previously served as The Hill’s business and lobbying editor and has held editing positions at The Washington Post Express and The Washington Examiner.

Farnoush Amiri is a congressional reporter based in Washington, D.C. She joined the Congress team in October 2021 after spending more than year as a statehouse reporter in Columbus, Ohio for AP. On Capitol Hill, Amiri has been covering the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. In addition, she has covered Congress’ effort to respond to mass gun violence for the first time in 20 years and the effort to enshrine access to abortion after the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade. Amiri grew up in the suburbs of Southern California after she and her family immigrated to the U.S. from Iran.

Kevin Freking is a reporter on Capitol Hill with previous stints covering the White House for the AP. Kevin covers a broad range of domestic and foreign policy issues at the Capitol, including federal spending and budgeting. He covered health care policy and Western regional politics at the AP before joining the Capitol Hill team. He is a graduate of Kansas State University.

Stephen Groves covers Congress for The Associated Press. He was previously based in South Dakota where he covered state government and politics.

Mary Clare Jalonick covers Congress with a current focus on the Senate. She hasrecently covered congressional investigations, including the probes of former President Trump’s ties to Russia, the Jan. 6 Capitol attack and both of Trump’s impeachments. She has also covered multiple Supreme Court confirmations, food policy and other legislative battles under the last four presidents. She is originally from Dallas and graduated from Davidson College.

Lisa Mascaro is AP’s chief congressional correspondent, leading coverage of Capitol Hill. She spearheads reporting on all facets of Congress, including legislative maneuvering, elections and the relationship between party leaders and the White House. Prior to joining AP, Mascaro spent eight years covering Congress and presidential politics for the Los Angeles Times.

Decision team:

Emily Swanson is AP’s director of public opinion research. A member of the AP polling unit in Washington since 2014, she designs survey questionnaires, analyzes polling data and writes about public opinion. Swanson previously worked in survey research for Pollster.com and the Huffington Post.

Chad Day is chief elections analyst for The Associated Press and a member of AP’s Decision Desk. He writes about politics, demographics and elections. He previously worked at The Wall Street Journal, where he was part of a team awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Investigative Reporting.

Serena Hawkins is AP’s decision desk data scientist. Serena’s training within the University of North Carolina’s Political Science PhD program allows her to develop the statistical models and tools needed to ensure accurate and rapid election night calls, helping declare winners in nearly every election across the U.S.

Stephen Ohlemacher is the election decision editor, managing a team of analysts that declares the winner in nearly every U.S. election. During presidential primaries, he oversees the AP delegate count, the gold standard for tracking presidential nominating contents. Ohlemacher spent nine years covering Congress for AP, writing about economic issues with a focus on tax policy and Social Security.

Maya Sweedler is a member of the AP's Decision Desk, focusing on explanatory elections coverage. She previously worked at FiveThirtyEight.

Robert Yoon is an Elections and Democracy reporter with a focus on analyzing vote and demographic data and explaining the intricacies of the electoral process. As Director of Political Research at CNN, he received two Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award for his contributions to the network’s election coverage. He has prepared a dozen moderators for more than 30 presidential debates, most recently for CBS News in 2020.

Linley Sanders is the polls and surveys reporter at The Associated Press, where she works on AP VoteCast and polls conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Linley started her career with the AP as a legislative relief reporter in Iowa. She is a graduate of Drake University.

News design and development team:

Darrell Allen is the Director of Global Design & Presentations at TheAssociated Press. He is a creative thought leader with experience in digital design leading a creative team of designers and developers to create content to help enhance and visualize AP's news report.

Ryan Best is a Data Visualization Developer for the elections team at The Associated Press. He was previously a Visual Journalist at FiveThirtyEight and Bloomberg Graphics. He is a proud alum of Northwestern University and the Parsons School of Design, where he earned a Masters of Science in Data Visualization.

Shelly Cheng is a data visualization developer on AP’s Elections & Democracy team, where she designs and builds interactive visualizations for U.S. presidential and local elections. Her broad experience spans both technology and journalism industries, including roles as a software engineer at Splunk and as a graphics reporter in newsrooms like The Wall Street Journal, NBC, NPR, and The Texas Tribune. Cheng holds an M.S. in Computer Science and an M.S. in Journalism from Columbia University, along with a B.A. in Political Science from Colorado College.

Dan Kempton, a 15-year veteran at The Associated Press, holds the role of technical lead for elections visuals. With expertise as a seasoned developer, Dan plays a pivotal role in delivering engaging, precise, and transparent elections data to AP members and the general public. In addition to his visual contributions, he actively develops newsroom tools and assists in moderating data team infrastructure, enhancing the overall efficiency of AP's news operations.

Humera Lodhi is lead designer on the elections and democracy team, based out of New York. She previously worked at FiveThirtyEight, The Kansas City Star and The Marshall Project. She received her master's in Data Journalism from Columbia University and her bachelor's degrees in Journalism and Statistics from the University of Missouri. Humera uses data, design and reporting to expose systemic failures, break down complicated policy and highlight stories of diverse communities.

Pablo Barría Urenda is a self taught web developer from Chile. He holds a Master of Architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.

On the Hill, he covers an array of issues, including judician nominations, ethics and Dodd-Frank repeal efforts. Prior to AP, Freking was Washington correspondent for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

Laurie Kellman  is a reporter and editor who has covered Congress and elections for more than two decades. Her focus includes the freshman lawmakers looking to make a mark on Congress. She has covered the presidential campaigns of Bob Dole, Donald Trump, John McCain and George W. Bush, the impeachment proceedings of President Bill Clinton and an assortment of legislation.
